Present Simple – When to use it?
- We use the present simple tense for things that are always true, for truths and situations that are permanent. (A1)
- Vegetarians don’t eat meat.
- The President of the USA lives in the White House.
- We use the present simple for things you do every day, week, year, etc. It involves routines, customs, and habits. (A2)
- I go exercise twice a week.
- My husband works from 8.00-5.00.
- We can use the present simple to talk about fixed future events and schedules, which are certain. (B1)
- Term ends on 16th June.
- Our office closes next Friday at noon.
- Other uses of the present simple: historic present when telling jokes and informal stories, to ask and give instructions and directions, itineraries, headlines, plots of stories, films, proverbs and sayings, reviews and summaries. (B2)
