a) After verbs of perception: feel, hear, see, notice, watch…

  • I saw her getting on the bus.
  • I saw her get on the bus.

Note:

  1. We use the -ing form to emphasize the progress of an action (we can see/hear, etc. only a part of an action in progress).
  2. We use the bare infinitive to suggest the completion of an action (we can see/hear, etc. the whole action from the beginning to the end).

b) After verbs: let, make

  • The film made me cry.

Note:

  •  He was made to clean his room.
    → If we use these verbs in the passive, we take infinitive with to.

c) After expression: had better, would rather/would sooner

  • I had better cook dinner but I would rather read a book.
  • I’d rather you didn’t smoke.
