Use of comparatives and superlatives (B1)

comparative adjective + than + an object pronoun (me, him, her, etc)

or

a subject pronoun (I, he, she, etc) + auxiliary verb

  • I am a better driver than him. (!not he)
  • I am a better driver than he is.
  • This homework is less difficult than the last one.

the same … as

  • Did you go to the same school as your father?

as + adjective + as

  • He is as rich as we are.

not as/so + adjective + as

  • Today is not as/so cold as yesterday.

less + adjective + than

  • Travelling by train is less comfortable than travelling by plane.

We also use comparative adverbs to compare two actions.

  • Women drive more carefully than men.
  • Can you go more slowly, please?
  • He doesn’t speak French as well as his brother does.

  • Modifying comparatives:

    1. Comparatives can be made stronger by using: much/far/a lot.
      • The apartment is a lot more expensive than I thought.
      • She is much happier than she used to be.
    1. Comparatives can be made weaker by using: a bit/a little/slightly.
      • The new bag is slightly more expensive than the old one.
      • This way is a bit longer.
    1. Comparatives can be used to place emphasis by using: by far/easily/nearly/almost.
      • Cantina is by far the best restaurant in our city.
      • This is easily the worst musical I’ve seen in a long time.

    Superlatives

    1. We normally use the with superlative adjectives and adverbs, but it is also possible to use possessive adjectives.
      • She is the best student in the class.
      • She is my best friend.
    2. We often use a superlative with present perfect + ever.
      • This is the most expensive bag I have ever bought.
      • It is the most boring film I have ever seen.
    3. Use in (not of) before places after a superlative.
      • She is the most beautiful girl in the class.
      • He is the least experienced programmer in our company.
