Should (B2–C1)

The use of should make the action less likely to happen. Something is possible but unlikely to happen.

  • If you should see Mary, can you give her a message?
  • Should you need my help, don’t hesitate to call me.
  • If anyone should ask for me, I’ll be in the canteen.
  • Should you need anything else, let me know.
  • If you should find the essay I was asking you about, please let me know.

Would in an if-clause

We are politely asking somebody to do something.

  • I would be grateful if you would send me the application form as soon as possible.
  • Shall I help you? – Yes, please, if you would.
