Lesson 6 of 6
In Progress

Say and tell

  1. Say + something
    • Do not use a person or an object pronoun after ‘say’.
    • In this context,  ‘say’ is not followed by the person to whom the words were spoken.
    • Example: ‘I’m so happy,’ he said.  → He said (that) he was happy. (not He said her…)
  2. Tell + someone + something
    • We tell somebody something (facts, information, opinions) – we give information to a person so we need to use a person or pronoun.
    • Example: Dad tells me to go to bed early.
  3. Say + to somebody + something
    • Say cannot have a person as a direct object. We need to use a preposition to followed by the person.
    • Example: ‘What did Mary say to you?’ she asked.
She said (that) she was going to the cinema.
She told me (that) she was going to the cinema.
She said to me (that) she was going to the cinema.
