Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous

  • I have been writing the reports for two hours. (emphasis on duration)
  • I have been writing the reports. (means I haven’t finished)
  • I’m so exhausted. I have been writing the reports all day. (action in the past that has a result in the present, it may be finished or unfinished)
  • I’ve been studying a lot lately. (that’s temporary)

  • I have written the email. (a completed action, the result is important)

Some verbs do not have progressive form; they are called non-active or state verbs (watch chapter State and active verbs).

  • We have been married for ten years. (emphasis on duration; means I’m still married, unfinished action)
  • I have had a dog since I was ten. (emphasis on duration; means I still have the dog, unfinished action)

The verbs live and work are often used in either present perfect simple or present perfect continuous with the same meaning.
