Present Perfect Continuous – How do we form it?

We form the present perfect continuous with: has/have been + ing*(present participle)

Statement: I have/I’ve been studying all night and I’m tired now.

Question: How long have you been waiting?

Negative: He has not/hasn’t been waiting for a long.

Note:

  • She has been cleaning the windows.                             The action may or may not be finished.
  • She has cleaned the windows.                                       The action is finished.

     

The verbs live and work can be used in either present perfect simple or present perfect continuous with the same meaning.

  • We have lived in London for twenty years.
  • We have been living in London for twenty years.
