Present Continuous – Irregular spelling

Exceptions with the -ing form:

1. If a verb ends in –e, we leave out –e before the ending –ing:

Take
Taking
Bite
Biting
Like
Liking

This exception DOES NOT apply to:

Be
Being
See
Seeing
Agree
Agreeing

2.  -y doesn’t change before –ing:

Try
Trying
Dry
Drying
Fly
Flying

3. If a verbs ends in a vowel + consonant we double the consonant at the end:

Plan
Planning
Stop
Stopping
Forget
Forgetting

4. If a verb has more than one syllable, we double the consonant at the end only if the final syllable is stressed:

Permit
Permitting
Admit
Admitting
Begin
Beginning

5. If a verb ends in –ie, -ie changes to –y before the ending –ing:

Lie
Lying
Die
Dying
Tie
Tying

6. In British English, verbs ending in –l have double –ll before –ing:

Travel
Travelling
Cancel
Cancelling
Control
Controlling

7. Verbs ending in –c change -c to –ck:

Picnic
Picnicking
Mimic
Mimicking
Traffic
Trafficking
