Past Perfect Simple – When do we use it?

We use the past perfect to describe an action that happened before another action in the past.

The past perfect simple refers to the action that happened first/earlier. The past simple refers to the action that happened second/later.

  • When I spoke to him, I realized I had met him somewhere before.
  • He was expelled from the school because he had cheated in the exam.
