Modal Verbs – How do they differ from other verbs? (A1-A2)

We use modal verbs with other verbs to express different meanings, such as ability, permission, prediction, duty, total commitment, etc.

Modal verbs are:

will, would, can, could, may, might, shall, should, must

There are some differences from normal verbs:

  1. It does not change for the third person, so you do not use an ‘s’ for the 3rd person singular.
    • I can swim. / He can swim.
    • I can’t/cannot swim. / He can’t/ cannot swim.
  1. Questions are formed by the inversion of the subject and the verb.
    • Can you swim? May I help you?
  1. They are followed by the bare infinitive of another verb (the infinitive without to).
    • We can go to the cinema.
    • She must go to sleep.
