a) We use the infinitive to express a reason or purpose

b) After an adjective

  • Our kitchen is easy to clean.
  • Nice to meet you.

c) After certain verbs

 *advise, allow,  can/can’t afford, *agree, aim, ask,  appear, *arrange, attempt, beg,  choose, *decide, *demand, deserve, *desire, encourage,  *expect,  fail, forbid, force, happen, help, *hope,*intend, invite, *learn, long, manage, neglect, oblige, order,  offer, omit, permit, persuade, *plan, prepare, *pretend, *promise, refuse, recommend, remind, *seem, teach, tell, tend, *threaten, can’t wait, want, would like, warn, wish

*These verbs can be followed by an infinitive or a ‘that-clause’.

  • We agreed to spend Christmas abroad.
  • We agreed that we would spend Christmas abroad.
