A. so, as a result, therefore, for this reason, consequently, as a consequence, with the result that, etc.

  • He was late, so he took a taxi.
  • She was rushing to the office; therefore, she didn’t notice me.
  • There was an accident; consequently, I missed the plane.
  • As a result of the accident, I missed the plane.
  • He didn’t get the promotion. For that reason, he resigned.

B. hence, thus mean the same but they are more formal and are often used for writing.

  • The company failed to adapt to new trends; thus, it lost many customers.
  • She had no prior experience; hence, she found the job quite challenging.

C. so/such … that

such a/an + adjective + singular countable noun       

    • It was such a beautiful day (that) we decided to go for a walk.
    • It was such an exciting film.      

such + adjective + plural/uncountable noun

    • We’re such good friends that we go on holiday together.   
    • This is such good news to hear.  

so + adjective/adverb

    • She was so beautiful (that) he fell in love with her.
    • He runs so fast that I cannot keep up with him. 

so + many/much/few + with or without a noun

    • I have so many books that I need to buy another bookcase.
    • He talks so much (that) I get bored. 
    • There were so few people at the meeting that it was postponed.
